Hilary Duff's Cozy California Home
Hey now — Hilary Duff’s home is what dreams are made of! The Younger star, 30, is opening the doors to her charming California abode that she shares with five-year-old son Luca in the February issue of Better Homes and Gardens, and the dusty rose door on the otherwise dark facade just touches the surface of the design-savvy surprises within.
“I’ve never seen myself as girlie, and I don’t own much pink, even though I love it,” she said of the unexpected choice, which she attributes to her passion for Pinterest. “I live on it,” she joked. “I make boards all day.”

DIY Diva
Warm wood floors and a simple but striking chandelier set the tone for the entry. To add a punch of pattern, her designers, Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl of Studio Life.Style, combined three vintage rugs to form a one-of-a-kind runner on the stairs. “Cutting up the rugs to make them fit exactly was so stressful,” Duff admitted.

Luxe But Livable
Contemporary pieces like velvet chairs and bronze side tables give the living room a glamorous feel — but Duff was careful not to be too precious with her furnishings. “This house is a sanctuary for me and Luca, so I always shop with him in mind,” she said. “He’s respectful of our belongings, but I want him to be able to roughhouse and do other kid things here.”

Tile Style
Duff did not shy away from bold or quirky prints. She was so drawn to the oversize zig-zag tile on the backsplash and island that she repeated the look on her patio (see photo 9).

Happy Hub
The dining room continues her approachable aesthetic with a blue, glass light fixture, leather-and-wood chairs and plenty of natural light. “Hilary wanted her home to feel feminine and modern but definitely lived-in and cozy,” said designer Wollack.

Tough Cuts
The actress keeps her spaces streamlined with this simple mantra: “Whenever I’m on the verge of buying something — whether a chair or a pair of earrings — I ask myself, ‘Will I still love it when I get to be 60 or 70?’”

Old Meets New
Above a showstopping credenza sits the first piece of artwork Duff ever purchased: Damien Hirst’s Butterfly Kaleidoscope. "I see the things I'm acquiring along the way—the rugs, the art, and anything that Luca makes—as new collectibles," she said. "As a result, the house feels full of memories and also of opportunities—new, old, and yet-to-come."

Paper Walls
A floral-covered bedroom pays homage to Duff’s own upbringing. “I grew up with wallpaper,” she said. “My mom was fanatical about it, so it makes me feel nostalgic.”

Room to Grow
As she and her young son grow together, Duff sees her home as the comfortable backdrop for their busy lives. “This house is so versatile; it allows us to open up all the doors and have fun,” she said.
