Inside Former Bachelorette Jillian Harris' Vancouver Home: 'It Took a Ton of Trial and Error to Get It Feeling Just Right!'
Jillian Harris' Refreshed Vancouver Retreat
After the birth of her son Leo, in August 2016, former Bachelorette and interior designer Jillian Harris was itching for a new look in the Canadian condo she shares with fiance Justin Pasutto. “While we were planning out Leo’s nursery, I decided that I wanted to update the entire Vancouver home at the same time so that it was up to date and ‘kid friendly,’” Harris writes in a post on her website. “I wanted it to feel like a designer lived there while making it bright, airy and beautiful.”
Although the space serves as a second home for the young family (they stay here when Harris is filming her series, Love It Or List It Vancouver), she says she still wished the space could “be more ‘homey’ feeling and comfortable." To get the job done, she teamed up with affordable furniture and decor site Wayfair and together created a practical yet pretty home to rival even the best HGTV reveals.
“I actually designed everything with Leo in mind,” Harris tells Wayfair. “We got rid of the knickknacks, clutter and hard edges. We replaced them with lots of soft corners and then added some pops of color and softer finishes.” An ottoman in place of a coffee table, an easy-clean area rug and a slipcovered couch for easy washing are a few of the kid-friendly features that make their refreshed family room livable.
Art with Heart
Harris chose her bright artwork for more than just the pleasing visual. “We also added graphic art with colors that are good for babies' mental stimulation,” she says.
The small condo’s open floor plan needed to have distinct zones and a cohesive design. Harris’ trick: look at decorating like a clothing choice. “I definitely think fashion and interior design go hand-in-hand,” she says. “If you have good style in one, then you will probably have good style in the other! It’s all about having an eye for what looks good together.”
Organization is key for Harris’ compact square footage. “I am all about tons of storage and having an ‘everything has its place’ mantra,” she says. “Ultimately, my house needs to be clean and orderly so that when I am home I can focus on Leo and my family, and just relax.”
“I love the headboard in my bedroom,” Harris says of her sweet sleeping space. Some may find splitting time between two homes exhausting, but she sees it as an opportunity to experiment with new looks. “The Vancouver home in particular needs to be functional and clutter-free without feeling too cold,” she says. “It took a ton of trial and error to get it feeling just right!"
Try and Try Again
As an interior designer and a homeowner, Harris’ biggest piece of decorating advice is to be flexible. “If something doesn’t feel right, try moving it to a different room or location,” she says. “A well-designed room with personality evolves over time, so it’s okay if it doesn’t come together all at once!”
