The Grey's Anatomy star shows off her welcoming abode
Meredith Grey may feel right at home inside the operating room, but Ellen Pompeo much prefers the interiors of her Los Feliz, California abode.
“I’m a straight-up homebody. It’s hard to get me out of the house once the sun goes down,” Pompeo, 46, tells Good Housekeeping in their September issue.
Although she teamed up with friend and interior decorating guru Martyn Lawrence Bullard to help pull the house together, the Grey’s Anatomy star still had a hand in the overall design decisions.
“The house was like an old relic,” Pompeo says. “Hadn’t been updated since it was built in the ’20s. Everything about the house needed to be refreshed.”
Fashion, hotels and hangouts like Soho House in New York City all served as inspiration for its now cozy-cool aesthetic.
“The house represents [my family] because it’s hip but also comfortable,” she says.
One standout is the beautiful exterior, which Pompeo likes to enjoy with everyone who lives on the property — dogs and chickens included.
“To be able to have all the fruit trees and the chickens and everything, I think it’s so nice for the kids,” Pompeo says. “I think everything I did outside was with the girls in mind.”

A happy home for herself and her husband, Chris Ivery, and their daughters Stella Luna, 6, and Sienna May, 2, was the actress’s main goal. Fun, bold accent pieces, plush furniture — “It’s fancy in a cool way, not in a ‘I can’t sit there’ way” — and accessible outdoor spaces make that dream a reality.
“My home is a place to have a good time with the kids. I had such a painful childhood and have such a happy family life now,” Pompeo says.
