Brooke Shields’s tip for flawless holiday hosting? Expect the unexpected.
In a tour of her New York City townhouse, the actress and model, 52, admits she takes a refreshingly laid-back approach to her seasonal gatherings.
“I think it’s important to plan ahead, but always leave room for something spontaneous to happen and for an unexpected surprise to add to the party,” she tells Architectural Digest.
Large-scale bird photographs by Australian artist Leila Jeffreys, a stone mantel rescued from the Plaza Hotel and hand-blocked wallpaper usually steal the show in Shields’s Manhattan home. But when December rolls around, she decks the halls with greenery from Balsam Hill, custom stockings and plenty of sparkling lights.
Her “French country feel” complete with “some pops of color” is best seen in her family room, where she’ll gather with her husband Chris Henchy, 53, and their daughters Rowan, 14, and Grier, 11, to open gifts.
“This is where we’re going to be opening our presents, or at least my kids will be opening their presents,” she says with a laugh.
A secondary living spot boasts a cozier aesthetic in the historic abode, which she spent a year-and-a-half restoring.
“I wanted to have a lot of candles and I wanted the feeling of the tree to be a bit more monochromatic,” she explains.

The most sentimental detail, though, is the faux-spruce centerpiece’s finishing touch.
“My favorite part is the star,” she says of the button-covered topper outlined with gold ribbon. “Because my girls made the star.”
