Tatum O'Neal Recovering After Undergoing Spinal Surgery: 'I Made It!!'
Tatum O’Neal revealed that she underwent an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF)
Tatum O’Neal is on the mend after undergoing spinal surgery in Beverly Hills.
The Paper Moon actress, 55, updated fans on her progress on Instagram Wednesday, writing that she hoped to be back in action soon.
“I MADE IT!! Walking, talking dancing, souls cycle hiking in my near future,” she captioned a photo of her smiling while lying in her hospital bed.
O’Neal revealed that she underwent an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). The surgery is a type of spinal fusion that mends the front and lumbar spine bones together by removing and replacing the intervertebral disc with a bone or metal spacer, according to the USC Spine Center.
“ALIF is commonly performed for a variety of painful spinal conditions, such as spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc disease, among others,” according to USC’s website.
The Oscar winner also shared a video taken by her son Sean, 31, that showed her slowly making her way down a hospital hallway with the help of a walker the same day of her surgery.
In the clip, O’Neal and Sean share a hilarious exchange from the classic film Sunset Boulevard, in which she takes on the persona of star Norma Desmond. The caption contains explicit language.
“Yes, darling, I’m here. I’m alive and well,” she says in an affected voice, later adding, “It is so incredibly painful.”
“Day of surgery I chose to walk three times down that massive hallway,” O’Neal captioned the post. “Congrats to [Cedars-Sinai medical director of spine trauma surgery Dr. Neel Anand] master of all things spine.”

The actress went on to thank several friends for their support, as well as Sean, whom she welcomed with ex-husband John McEnroe in 1987.
“To my darling Sean I don’t know what I’d do without you your sage like wisdom and belief in me through all f-ups with which there were many. Without you I would not have made it for sure!!! Thank you my darling son !!! There are no words to describe my love for you honey . I love you . 😘 💝”
Daughter Emily, 27, was also on hand to support her mom, as O’Neal shared a pair of Instagram stories that showed her lounging in her hospital room, and snapping a selfie together.
The surgery is the latest setback for O’Neal, who publicly battled drug addiction for years and later revealed she “suffered years of abuse, both emotional and sexual.”
The actress shared in October that she “was always blamed” for the assaults because of her “loudness” and “curiosity,” and that it’s taken her “almost 55 years to know how to advocate for myself.”
