At over 600 lbs., with a failing heart, Randy Statum knows that he needs to lose weight, but he just can’t stay away from junk food.

Despite doctor’s orders to stay on a limited diet to lose 40 lbs. in a month so he can qualify for life-saving weight loss surgery, Statum gives in to temptation in this exclusive clip from Wednesday’s episode of My 600-lb Life.

“This past month has been really hard,” Statum, 35, says. “I just feel very discouraged right now. And I feel like all my progress doesn’t matter right now because it didn’t pay off.”

Though he’s down from his highest weight of 640 lbs., it’s not enough to keep Statum going.

“Losing 40 lbs. and getting more active has allowed me to start going out with my family more,” Statum says. “But it’s hard being around what everyone else is eating, and I find comfort in food right now.”

Statum wants to lose weight for more than just his own health – divorced, Statum has limited custody of his daughter, and wants to see her.

“I know my heart is getting weaker, and that is one of the scariest things for me to think about. So I don’t,” he says. “I want to do this, and get my daughter back, but even if I lose another 40 lbs. I don’t know if it’s enough to get the surgery, so it’s hard to get motivated.”

And when he checks in with Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, a specialist in bariatric surgery, it’s clear that Statum lost his drive to lose weight. After successfully losing 40 lbs., the scale shows that he’s gained 14 lbs. in a month.

“So let me get this straight, I tell you last time that you need to lose more weight because your heart is weakened, and you gain more weight? What happened?” Dr. Nowzaradan asks.

In addition to the tough love, Dr. Nowzaradan gives Statum an ultimatum – lose 55 lbs. in two months, or the surgery can’t happen.

“It’s very simple, your heart is failing. It could give out tomorrow, a week, or three months. The only way to stop that is to lose weight so your heart gets strong again. You do that, you get the surgery. You don’t, you’re not going to be alive this time next year.”

“If you want to live, lose the weight.”
