Nicole Arbour Refuses to Apologize for 'Dear Fat People' YouTube Video on The View
Nicole Arbour is continuing to defend her “Dear Fat People” YouTube video despite the major backlash it has received.
The comedian and YouTube star appeared on The View on Wednesday, stating that the video was actually meant to be offensive.
“That video was made to offend people, just the way I do with all my other videos,” Arbour said on the show. “It’s just satire, it’s just being silly. I’m just having a bit of fun, and that’s what we did.”
“That topic was actually voted in by fans, some of whom are fat,” she continued. “They’re like, ‘You can’t make fun of some people and not make fun of me too.’ ”
Joy Behar told Arbour that she takes issue with the video because Arbour herself is not overweight, so therefore doesn’t have the right to poke fun at people who are.
“I’m a comic, so if I’m going to do a joke about a fat person, I’m going to say I’m fat first,” Behar said. “You’re not fat. That’s the problem.”
Behar also said she didn’t buy the argument that Arbour made the video out of a concern for overweight people’s health.
“You sort of hide behind this, ‘Well it’s not healthy,’ ” Behar said. “That’s bull and you know it. You don’t care about their health.”
Arbour defended herself by saying that the video wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
“I do care about people’s health, but the whole thing was a joke and I make fun of myself all the time,” she said. “I think we’ve all got to make jokes about everybody.”
Arbour’s rant against fat people – in which she says that “fat-shaming is not a thing” – has been removed from YouTube, but had racked up over 18 million views, and currently has over 28 million views on Facebook.
Whitney Thore of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life responded with a point-by-point takedown of Arbour’s claims in the video, while Gabourey Sidibe told PEOPLE she believes Arbour is "incredibly ignorant."
Arbour allegedly was fired from a film job due to what many found to be an insensitive post, though she denied that those claims are true.
