Katja Bavendam and Julie McGuire have been married for a year, and despite the fact that Bavendam is 6’8″ and McGuire is 5’2″, height has really never played a factor in their relationship.

“I never really notice anyone unless they’re at my eye level, so it doesn’t really matter if someone is 5’6″ or 5’2″,” Bavendam, 31, tells PEOPLE. “I never limited myself in trying to find a partner with a certain height. If I could pick my ideal partner, maybe Julie would be a little bit taller, but it never really mattered to me.”

There was only one occasion when the My Giant Life star actually cared about their dramatic height difference.

“The only time it concerned me was on our wedding day,” she says. “Your wedding day is the one time that you want to look good standing next to each other. But that was easy to figure out – she stood a step higher than me when we took pictures, and she wore heels and I wore flats.”

For Bavendam, being tall has mostly been an advantage.

“The best part is being unique,” she says. “People always remember me. It helped me with my basketball career! [And it helps with] being able to see above the crowds instead of being stuck in it.”

That’s not to say being nearly 7-feet-tall doesn’t have its drawbacks.

“Planes and cabs are uncomfortable and it’s hard to find pants,” says Bavendam. “Tables and chairs generally seem a little too small – but those are things that I’m used to so that doesn’t keep me up at night!”

Catch Bavendam and McGuire on the season two premiere of My Giant Life, June 7 at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
