Chrissy Metz will lose weight along with her character Kate on This Is Us

Chrissy Metz isn’t opposed to losing weight if that’s what her story arc on the hit show This Is Us demands.

“Like most actors, we are chameleons, so we have different roles — like Christian Bale lost all that weight for The Machinist,” Metz, 36, says while appearing on Thursday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “So I was kind of like, ‘Oh, I hope I get to lose weight.’ That’s like a win-win for me, [I’ll be] motivated in a different way this time.”

Metz will be going along the same weight loss journey as her character Kate — who is currently considering gastric bypass surgery — but says no one on the show is forcing her to lose weight.

“It wasn’t mandated,” she says. “It wasn’t like, ‘You have to do this.’ But if this is the story line, naturally you would lose weight. So I’m excited if that should happen.”

But she probably won’t have to do anything too drastic — Metz hinted on the talk show that Kate may not go through with her surgery plans.

“It is a fast fix and it’s not always the right answer,” she says. “I can’t give away too much! With the character, with Kate, she wants a quick fix but that’s not what it’s about. It’s not about the food — it’s the symptom. So we’ll get to see all the details.”

Metz previously told PEOPLE that losing weight is in her contract, but says both she and Kate will be shaping up “in a healthy manner.”

The actress said that she “started incorporating a better eating regimen and started to do things personally, but not something so drastic because it’s going to be a lifestyle change not just for Kate but for me.”

Metz continued, “I have to be aware of not losing too much weight because of the show. … I want to do it in the right way. It’s a gradual process.”

This Is Us airs Tuesdays (9 p.m. ET) on NBC.
