Edwards was found dead in her Minneapolis home by a friend on June 14. She was 37. Police were investigating Edwards’ cause of death, noting that there were no obvious signs of trauma at the scene. Her mother, Laurie Sayre, says that she received the call seven weeks later, informing her of Edwards’ heart condition, a right ventricular arrythmogenic cardiomyopathy. “7 weeks ago today I got the phone call that every parent dreads. My youngest daughter Samie died,” Sayre writes. “We have waited patiently for the results on the cause of her death. Today I got that call. Samie had an undiagnosed genetic heart condition. Right ventricular arrythmogenic cardiomyopathy. It even sounds awful. If we had known she could have been treated.” “We were lucky to have those 37 years. I thank God for her. She was just one of my 3 blessings. I love and miss you so much Samantha Edwards.” An official press release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirms that Edwards died of a heart condition: “The death investigation has concluded that this individual died of natural causes, the cause of death an arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy.” Edwards, who went on to compete in the Miss USA pageant, was remembered by her friends and fellow contestants following her death. “She could walk into a room, and she just lights up the room,” her friend Jennifer Williams told PEOPLE. “She just had this outgoing personality. Even if she didn’t know you, she’d walk up as if she knew you. She was warm and welcoming to everybody she came into contact with.” Jessica Dereschuk, another friend of Edwards, had talked to her just a week before her death. “She was a former Miss Dakota USA and I was a Miss Minnesota USA, so there kind of was an instant bond,” Dereschuk told PEOPLE. “She was the most, loyal, compassionate ball of energy you could ever come across. Her magic was connecting people. She was the type of person who could sit down on an airplane and by the time it landed, she created another friend.” “She was healthy, she was happy,” Dereschuk said. “There’s no way to really understand this.”
