Ariel Winter Responds to a 'Certain Interview' About Body Shaming and Nude Selfies

The Modern Family star continues to promote body positivity

Ariel Winter wants to promote body positivity – not let people tear each other down.

The Modern Family star posted, without naming names, a response to an interview about body shaming and nude selfies. Chloë Grace Moretz‘s explanation in the latest issue of Glamour about why she decided to call out Kim Kardashian for her nude selfie is the likely target.

“Many have asked about my opinion on a certain interview all I’m going to say is this: If you take a photo in which you feel CONFIDENT about yourself and think it spreads a positive image, then GO FOR IT,” Winter, 18, wrote on Instagram. “The ‘background’ doesn’t matter- what matters is the message you are putting out there is true to what YOU believe in- not what anyone else says about YOU.”

“I do what I can to create that positive light for my fans and I’m sure other celebrities are doing it in THEIR OWN WAY- no need to put one another down. No picture is the exception to someone else’s rule. Even if some people ‘know who they are.’ Live life on your own terms.”

In her interview with Glamour, Moretz, 19, said she didn’t think Kardashian’s nude selfie was body positive.

“That picture wasn’t linked to body confidence,” the Neighbors 2 star said. “It wasn’t a #BodyConfidence or #LoveWhoYouAre. It was done in a slightly voyeuristic light, which I felt was a little inappropriate for young women to see.”

“I would hate for young women to feel they need to post certain photos in order to gain likes, retweets, favorites, and male attention … I wasn’t slut shaming. It’s not about body shaming.”

Winter said at the time that Kardashian was in fact being body shamed.

“No one was body shaming @justinbieber when he posted his nude guitar photo so why @KimKardashian? #herbodyherchoice #InternationalWomensDay,” she tweeted on March 8. “I think everyone, men and women, should have the right to choose what they do with their bodies– and not be criticized.”

Kardashian thanked Winter for standing up for her, while calling Moretz an unknown.

“let’s all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one know who she is. your nylon cover is cute boo”

Winter is known for being vocal about body image – she posted a photo celebrating her breast reduction scars in February after people criticized her for exposing them on the Golden Globes red carpet.

“Embrace all that you are Scars & everything,” she Instagrammed. “Your imperfections make you perfectly you #loveyourself.”
