“I just love the kitchen because it’s where the food’s coming out of,” the actor, 37, tells PEOPLE. “Food always makes everyone happy. It certainly makes me happy.”
As a new parent to son Conrad, 7 months, with wife Elspeth Keller, 31, Scott has been spending even more time in the kitchen than before.
“Now that we’re parents, everything comes out of here,” he says. “You’re prepping bottles here or you’re making pizzas or you’re scrambling up some eggs. Something always smells good in here.”
Scott designed the kitchen from scratch, with the help of decorator Kaitlin McHugh, after gutting his entire Los Angeles home.
“I wanted it to feel clean, but also inviting, so that’s why we opened it up,” he says. “We knocked the wall down to make it feel like a place you want people to gather.”
With a huge countertop and ample seating, the kitchen often becomes the focal point of any social gathering at Scott’s 4-bedroom home.
“Everyone always ends up in the kitchen at any party,” he says.
Like the other rooms in his house, the kitchen has what Scott describes as a “mid-century modern-hippie vibe.”
“My wife and I are fairly hippie-ish at heart,” he explains. “We both were sort of raised that way, but then we’ve always gravitated towards the mid-century modern look, so we just layered our weird hippie stuff over that!”
