As an elite personal trainer and creator of the hugely popular Insanity program, Shaun T knows fitness. Now he’s hosting ABC’s new weight loss competition My Diet Is Better Than Yours – where five average Americans are paired with a celebrity trainer to help them shed pounds. A weight loss journey is serious. Yes, this is a TV show, but this is also real life. Why am I stressing this? Because you and only you have the ability to control your journey. It’s not going to work if you are not pushing yourself past your limits.

Pushing past your limits is something you do every day when you get tired in a workout but wanting to quit is not an option. Each pound you lose is synonymous with digging deeper. Go past your limits! Push yourself to new heights! All of this comes from a motto I live by: You must be comfortable being uncomfortable.

The reason why I stayed 50 lbs. overweight for so long was because I was comfortable hiding behind my internal secrets. I was comfortable hiding in the bigger clothes. I had no accountability and I had no one to answer to until I realized I needed to answer to myself.

The contestants on this show realized that ultimately it’s not about their experts. It’s not about the money. It’s about them. So at the end of the seventh episode when the experts left the show, it was an eye opening experience for everyone. In their heads they had to have the discussion with themselves. They had to train themselves. They had to motivate themselves and the biggest thing they had to do was to accept themselves.

Acceptance happens immediately but you must embrace the internal you. When you set out on your own journey, you will experience the same things these contestants experienced. It’s scary, it’s challenging, it’s fun, it’s fearful, it’s success, it’s failure, it’s getting back up and trying again — but most of all, it’s life. Kurt said it best, “Strive for something better and don’t be mediocre in your life!” This show is real life. You saw Taj give up. How many of you hit points in your life when you wanted to give up?

The reason why I got so emotional when Taj quit is because I knew no matter how big or small, a setback is definitely possible. You have to figure out ways to move forward and even if you hit a snag you must continue to trust and believe in who you are. No one can trust you for you and no one can believe you for you. As you saw at the end of the half marathon, La’Tasha said, “This means there isn’t anything I can’t do.” That goes for you, too! You really can do anything you put your mind to.

Jasmin, Jay, Kurt, and La’Tasha really pushed themselves to get to the next level in their lives. You see that if you stick to something, you will find success. It’s a beautiful thing to know that you can go all the way. That’s not to leave out Taj. Taj is a great example of what we all go through daily. Struggles, whether it be internally or externally, they do happen. What I do know is that all of these contestants, including Taj, are continuing their weight loss journey. But most of all they are continuing a life-long healthy journey. It’s not always about the weight—sometimes it’s about the baggage you carry in your life.
