We’re not going to lie — noodles for buns is one of our favorite wacky food trends of the new millennium.
While people have been obsessing over Keizo Shimamoto’s ramen burgers since he invented them in 2013 (we even figured out how to make them), we have a new crush. Xtreme food blogger Jeremy Batista, known to his thousands of junk-food-loving devotees as Peep My Eats, developed an oozy, crispy, decadent grilled cheese exclusively for PEOPLE made of — you guessed it — ramen bread! (Note to purists of any sort: We are using the term “bread” here incredibly loosely.)
“My inspiration for this dish actually came from not having any bread one day. I really wanted a grilled cheese sandwich and I figured hey, if ramen replaces the buns on burgers, why not a grilled cheese?” he tells PEOPLE.
Despite its wacky appearance, the dish is actually “pretty simple to make.”
Follow Batista’s guide, as follows:
First, simply cook your ramen noodles as you normally would. Once they are done, drain the liquid and let them cool for a few minutes. Scramble 2 eggs and dip your noodles in the egg, place your noodles in a hot pan using a square cookie cutter or Styrofoam to shape your noodles in a bread slice shape. Press down with your spatula to pack together and on both sides. Add cheese & bacon and cook like you normally would a grilled cheese.
For visual learners, here’s a 15-second video recipe:
Batista goes with bacon, but the sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing the filler ingredients. Stuff your sandwich with tomatoes, caramelized onions or even avocado. (Or simply double up on bacon. That can’t go wrong.)
