It may have been Rachael Ray‘s second wedding (to the same guy), but it was her first time getting a piece of the cake.
“At my real wedding 10 years ago, I was so into the party and so excited, I just started dancing and by the time I got around to wanting to try the cake it was gone,” Ray tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It wasn’t even a cake; it was actually a semifreddo. I vividly remember looking at it, but I never got to eat it.”
At her Sept. 19th renewal ceremony to husband John Cusimano, however, she made sure to get her hands on a slice.
Baked by resident pastry chefs Michele and Jessica of Castello di Velona, the Tuscan castle-turned-resort in Italy where the pair held the ceremony (and were originally married), the cake had four tiers, each made with a different flavor.
The first consisted of a chantilly cream with wild berries, the second was a pistachio and raspberry Bavarian cream, then hazelnut and chocolate Bavarian cream, and finally a vanilla with chocolate Bavarian cream — all topped off with a classic vanilla frosting and adorned with fresh grapes (a nod to the surrounding Montepulciano vineyard setting).
And the verdict? “It was absolutely spectacular,” Ray says. “I hate sweets. I’d always rather drink,” she admits. “But this cake was amazing.”
