Why We Really, Really Want to Have Dinner with Mindy Kaling
SHE'S NOT AFRAID TO BE 'BASIC'
"I guess I'm basic now," Kaling captions a post of her colorful lunch with B.J. Novak at N.Y.C. restaurant Jack's Wife Freda.a(If avocado toast is "basic," we don't want to be anything but.) For dessert, they mozied on over to Ladurée, the legendary macaron and French pastry destination, and ordered three desserts for the two of them. We so, so approve.
SHE HAS EXQUISITE TASTE IN ICE CREAM
When Kaling receiving a shipment of Steve's Ice Cream, she captioned her Instagram, "Today is the best day of my life." (And we do not read any sarcasm in that statement.) She enjoyed flavors such as whoopee pies and sweet cream, speculoos cookie butter and salty caramel, and we will never stop being jealous about this.a
SHE ALSO HAS GOOD TASTE IN FRIENDS
And her friends are seriously good cooks. While Kaling was working on her next book earlier this year, her Mindy Project costar Ike Barinholtz came over and prepared her orecchiette with fennel sausage and swiss chard, just like the L.A. restaurant, Osteria Mozza, makes it. Swoon.
SHE 'HEART'S TREATS
Kaling understands that it's not just how something tastes, but also how it looks – as one can see from this lovely peanut butter and jelly topped greek yogurt parfait.
SHE (TRIES) TO RESIST TEMPTATION
"I went to crafty for a healthy snack not to have the living s--- scared out of me #themindyproject," she shared of these spooky cupcakes. No word on if she actually ate any out of fear.
SHE MIXES FAMILY AND FOOD
We love getting a glimpse of her yummy-looking chili cheese fries – but where's the snapshot of your "hot stepfather," Mindy?
SHE GOES FULL-THROTTLE
A table filled with friends and food? Crossing our fingers that we'll make the next invite list.
SHE CUDDLES WITH THIS
Returning to The Mindy Project after a break, Kaling gleefully snuggled with this ice-cream sandwich pillow, which she called "the one that knows me the best."
SHE MIGHT INSPIRE US TO EAT SALAD
Though Kaling admits she’s eaten healthfully in her life "about four times," one of which might include her experiments with Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook, she’s a fan of the offerings at Powerplant Superfood Cafe in L.A. "The Sunrise Salad (two things I detest individually) is greens, shaved organic soft boiled egg, forbidden rice, crumbled tempeh bacon and pickled blueberries. Try it! I've gone crazy!" she writes.
HER BIRTHDAY CAKE TRUMPS OURS
SHE LOVES ETHIOPIAN FOOD
"Ethiopian is my favorite cuisine in the world and Meals by Genet is the best restaurant in Los Angeles. Genet is magic," writes Kaling about one of her go-to spots. (Do you really need more of a recommendation than that? We’re adding it to our L.A. bucket list.) On a recent visit, Kaling went back into the kitchen to hug the chef and snap a few photos.
TWO WORDS: CURED MEAT
On a recent trip to New York City, Kaling sampled the classic Italian sandwiches at Alidoro in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, which she called "Danny Castellano's favorite lunch spot." Though the notoriously grumpy owner sold the business a few years ago, his directives (and some recipes) remain.
DINNER? WE MEANT MOVIE NIGHT
Kaling’s assistant Sonia Kharkar certainly knows the way to her boss's heart: through sweet treats and reruns. Two days before Kaling's birthday, she brought her this care package devoted to staying in, snacking and watching TV. Kaling responded with so much praise, we're thinking a raise must be in the works: "My assistant @soniakharkar is f– amazing. She came over and brought over the best 'stay in and watch TV' birthday kit. This is seriously all my favorite things. I wish every day was two days before my birthday!"
SHE HAS A SWEET TOOTH
Sockerbit, a Scandinavian emporium devoted to candy and other Swedish delicacies, opened its second U.S. outpost in Los Angeles earlier this year (the first is in New York). How delighted was Kaling? Enough to delve into the realm of all caps and multiple exclamation points: "AT LAST!! A PLACE THAT CATERS TO MY SOUR CANDY AND SMOKED FISH NEEDS!!!"
BECAUSE THIS IS JUST TOO CUTE
We're suckers for Kaling's cheeky wit about her current culinary obsessions. But we also love it when she gets sentimental, like she did with this sweet Father's Day Tweet memorializing a familiar snack: "In high school, if I was up late studying, my dad would make me buttered toast and didn't go to sleep until I did. I wanna be like that."
...AND SO IS THIS
Kaling hated the background on one of the computers in The Mindy Project writers' room so she asked a co-worker to look for a new one by Googling "cupcakes that are friends" and "cookies that are friends." The result of his efforts? This cheery shot of a cookie-and-milk duo that's sure to help keep the staff's creativity flowing.
SHE MAKES US LAUGH
Kaling's short, pithy caption on this shot of a closed Dunkin' Donuts had us doubled over: "QUELLE NIGHTMARE," she wrote. We feel you, Mindy.
