Matthew McConaughey's 'Gold' Diet Consisted of Unlimited Cheeseburgers, Pizza and Beer

The actor dished on how he gained the weight for the film on Ellen.

Matthew McConaughey was fully committed to his leading role in the upcoming film Gold, and he packed on the pounds to prove it.

The Oscar-winner abandoned his normally rock solid beach bod to play struggling businessman Kenny Wells, and he did it in the most ideal way: eating with complete reckless abandon.

In an appearance on Ellen on Wednesday, McConaughey revealed he got his “padding” by indulging in “cheeseburgers and beer for eight months whenever I wanted them.”

The actor also noted that this diet made him popular with his wife, Camila Alves, and their three children, Levi, 8, Vida, 6, and Livingston, 3. “My nickname in the household was Captain Fun,” he said. “My wife misses all 217 pounds of me. The kids do too, because it was pizza night any night!”

And despite all the heavy carb-loading, he claims it never weighed him down. “The only thing that makes you tired from overindulging is the thought of quitting,” he said. “And I never got tired. I slept great; I had great energy.”

DeGeneres, like all of us, felt inspired by his diet. “I’m gonna gain weight for season 15,” she joked.

You can catch Gold in theaters nationwide starting January 27.
