Lena Dunham has always been proud of her body, but it’s only recently that she made the decision to focus on getting in shape.

“Part of the reason I wanted to do it was I was losing my breath when I walked up [a] stair,” the Girls star, 28, told David Letterman on Thursday. “And also, both my parents, who are 65, […] they’re both really exercise fiends. They look really hot, and I was just starting to feel like I was really dragging behind, and I was like, ‘You’re more than twice my age and I look like a bag of trash next to you.'”

Dunham has been doing “a variety of things” as part of her new “physical fitness kick,” she told the late-night host, including the celeb-loved Tracy Anderson Method.

“[It] involves mat work, sort of in the Pilates vein – small movements that look easy but are tortuous, and have made me realize just how broken my body really is,” she explained.

Another one of her go-to workouts is acro-yoga, which combines acrobatics and yoga movements. Letterman showed a photo of Dunham holding a yoga pose while balancing on the feet of her instructor during one of her 45-minute sessions.

“Believe it or not, that takes a lot of core strength,” she said. “You can see that — I say this with a lot of love — that behind the wall of fat [my core muscles] are doing a lot!”
