PEOPLE caught up with Bo OâConnor, the singerâs childhood best friend turned tour chef, at Buickâs Encore Backstage Classesat the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, California during Coachella, where Lady Gaga made history as the first woman headliner. And from Kindergarten through high school and onto stardom, OâConnor says their friendship âreally hasnât changed and thatâs the most amazing part.â âWhenever I get to see her, it really feels like we are teenagers again just gossiping and talking about whatever is happening in our lives,â the chef says about reuniting with the singer when they both get a break in their hectic schedules (OâConnor recently opened her own restaurant in Queens, New York called The Pomeroy). Before OâConnor opened her restaurant, Gaga approached her about the possibility of her joining her on her âJoanneâ worldwide tour as her personal chefâan opportunity she couldnât pass up. Lady Gaga and Her Father Are Releasing a Cookbook â Get All the Details âPeople always ask âwhatâs it like with your best friend being your boss?â and I just tell them when youâre working, youâre working and itâs professional and thatâs it. When youâre off you can be friends and whatever, but itâs a job and I took my job very seriously, and, for me, I think it made me a better chef,â she says. âYou have to be super organized and know where youâre going; itâs a lot of meal prep, going to the fresh market and all that stuff. Itâs a blast. Itâs different in every country and it was a wonderful experience.â Though the âBorn This Wayâ singerâs favorite foods are âvery much mood driven,â there are a few dishes that OâConnor tries to whip up on the daily, like salad and smoothies. âShe definitely will always have a salad throughout the day whether itâs for lunch or dinner,â says OâConnor. âThe salad can be different and change; it doesnât always have to be super lettuce-based, rather it can have other components that are a little bit more satisfying.â âShe likes natural based smoothies,â she continues, âvegan with coconut, coconut water, all fresh, and she tries to be very good at that on tour.â After a long dayâs work and burning calories from rocking on stage, the superstar does deserve an indulgence of her choice. And while the craving is sometimes one thatâs sure to come with a sugar high, there are some countries where the fruit is so good that it fulfills any type of sweet needâwith no guilt! âWhen we were in Tokyo, the fruit and produce was insaneâitâs to die forâso she definitely has a sweet tooth sometimes and likes chocolate and such, but in Japan the fruit is so amazing that you eat that and thatâs your indulgence,â OâConnor says. Rodrigo Pena/Invision for Buick/AP As for what youâd generally find in Gagaâs fridge? â[Itâs] filled with water, kombucha, some type of unsweetened ice tea, definitely greek yogurt and almond butter or any type of nut butters, and lots of types of fruits and vegetablesâkale, swiss chard, lemons, limes, ginger,â says OâConnor. And aside from wholesome food, you just might run into Lady Gaga herself. âItâs really funny because I will kick her out of my kitchen because she likes to cook,â the chef says about the singer, who grew up in an Italian family who was always cooking fresh meals. âI think itâs fun for her and itâs cathartic.â âSome people hate it, but she actually enjoys it,â she adds, âJust getting your hands on what youâre eatingâthereâs just a very much fun aspect to it.â
