“I do like to cook,” the actress told PEOPLE at Quaker’s Oatober event in Manhattan. “In this business, you have months where you’re super busy, then you have months where you’re not. It’s not a consistent thing. So whenever I have time to dedicate to making a really nice meal, I really take it.”
In terms of her skill level, she says: “I think I’m a solid 7.” Holmes, who is the oatmeal brand’s new spokesperson, is particularly keen getting quality time with Suri in the mornings. “I like to make a nice breakfast and start the day calmly. I like that time with my little one before school.”
And when it comes to making dinner, she sticks to her (and Suri’s) favorites. “I like making pasta and lasagna; I usually follow Mario Batali recipes,” she says. “[Suri] has her favorites, like most kids,” she adds, admitting, “I don’t really have any tactics to help [with picky eating]. I think like most parents you make the stuff you know that they like, and every once in a while you introduce something new.”
On nights when she’s been working a lot, she’s not above ordering in and eating on the couch. “I watch a lot of CNN, especially right now,” the outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter says. And as for her ultimate TV-watching snack? “Nachos.”

Though Holmes is a notably private person, she is very active on Instagram, frequently posting artistic shots of her N.Y.C. surroundings — with the occasional food photo or selfie thrown in for good measure.
And if you think her Instagram account looks carefully crafted, that’s because it is. “I try to post things that take time,” Holmes says. “I am careful with what I share; I think about it. To me it’s like a magazine.”
The actress has also recently taken a major leap in her career — stepping behind the camera in the upcoming drama All We Had, which Holmes both directed and is starring in.
“I definitely have a greater appreciation for all of the work and all of the directors that I have worked with have done,” she says. “I really like having creative control over projects. You put so much into it and it’s a lot of work but I can’t wait to do it again and again.”
