Matt Bomer is a man true to his word. After promising to eat fried chicken “in a mean, mean, way” once the Magic Mike XXL stripper scenes were over, the star and his castmates feasted at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room in Savannah, Georgia, where they’ve been filming.
Bomer was joined on Thursday afternoon by Joe Manganiello, Adam Rodriguez and Kevin Nash for lunch at the beloved Southern restaurant. The group chowed down on a sumptuous-sounding Southern spread that included biscuits, fried chicken, sweet potato soufflé and banana pudding.
“They ate a bunch,” said owner Marcia Thompson, granddaughter of the late Sema Wilkes, who started the boardinghouse-style restaurant in the 1940s. “They said they finished shooting at midnight and didn’t have to worry about their weight anymore. I think they had second and third helpings.”
Thompson helped set out bowls of food on the actors’ table and said she brought them a second platter of homemade biscuits, along with classic Southern dishes like macaroni and cheese, creamed corn, okra and tomatoes, and fried chicken, of course. Mrs. Wilkes is popular with locals and visitors alike, with diners often lining up before the restaurant opens at 11 a.m. — wonder if the actors got to jump the queue?
Though he might have professed a “mean, mean” attitude toward the fried chicken, as customers, Bomer and his castmates were anything but. “They were just as nice as they could be,” Thompson said.
PEOPLE got the recipe for the sweet potato soufflé, which would make a tasty addition to your Thanksgiving table this year.
