To get skin with a healthy glow, you don’t need the best products money can buy and a top-notch dermatologist on call. Give your skin a makeover from the inside out with these five foods.
Sure, you apply lotion every day, but ingesting omega-3s is a great way to double down on moisturizing your skin. Oily fish like salmon is a terrific source of healthy fat, and I love that it’s also packed with protein (a.k.a. a hunger-squashing superstar). Top Chef‘s Gail Simmons – a lady well versed in food and looking great on camera – is a fan. Another source of healthy fat that loads of celebs are into? Coconut oil. Mandy Moore uses it on her body and in her food!
Did you know that bell peppers are one of the best natural vitamin C sources around? True story. And vitamin C can stimulate collagen production in your body, helping your skin to look plump and healthy. Other good picks for a daily dose of vitamin C? Citrus fruits are no-brainers, but an unexpected one is papaya.
The reason to keep this fall favorite on hand year-round is zinc. The mineral is good for new cell production (read: youthful-looking skin) and could help control acne. So make sure you’re getting enough zinc! Oysters are another fantastic source.
Colorful fruits & veggies
Antioxidants, baby! They’ve been found to help protect and repair your skin cells, which helps to keep your skin looking young and beautiful. From jewel-toned berries to bright orange sweet potatoes to vibrant leafy greens, you want to taste the rainbow. (And I’m not talking Skittles.)
While technically not a food, drinking lots of water is one of the best things you can do for your skin. You stay hydrated, so does your skin. Think of a raisin – yeah, that’s why hydration matters. It’s one of the not-so-secret parts of Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima’s regimen, and it seems to be going pretty well for her. Get a refillable liter-sized bottle to tote around; drink a couple of those per day, and you’re off to a good start.
