Even though Beau “Casper” Smart is best known for being a choreographer, dancing is actually not his go-to workout when it comes to staying in shape.

It takes more than hitting the studio floor to get a toned physique, he says.

“All the dancers that I work with that have great bodies, they all go to the gym after or before rehearsal,” the Fake Off judge tells PEOPLE, explaining that dance rehearsals include a lot of downtime. “Instead of keeping [your heart rate] up for 45 minutes, you go up and down.”

That’s why Smart incorporates boxing into his routine four to five times a week — to supplement his choreography of stage shows and music videos.

“Boxing is by far the hardest workout I’ve ever done in my life,” he says. “I just got hooked on it.”

He also lifts weights three or four days a week to build up muscle.

“I can’t get the size with boxing,” explains Jennifer Lopez‘s on-and-off boyfriend. “It’s so much cardio that you just get thin, so I have to still do the weights.”

And he kicked his entire routine up a notch when  he was training to play a boxer in the upcoming film Street.

“I was boxing and fight-training for an hour and a half a day, and then I would go shoot for 12 hours,” he says. “After the shoot, usually around midnight or 1 a.m., I would go to the gym for an hour or an hour and a half, then I would hit the sauna for 15 minutes, and then I would sleep for 6 hours and then start over!”

Smart is also mindful of his diet, eating mostly lean protein and vegetables — and he makes sure to always stay hydrated.

“I try to drink a gallon of water a day,” he says. “Food-wise, no sugar, no carbs at all.”

However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t allow himself a cheat day.

“I have a sweet tooth, so I’ll do dark chocolate,” says Smart. “I try to keep it to a minimum. For the movie, I did apples and peanut butter, so that was my sugar – I got the protein, the fatty [food] I wanted, and the sugar I was craving, and I would eat it like four times a day!”

Lastly, he emphasizes the importance of getting six to eight hours of sleep a night.

“When you’re on a strict diet, you have to sleep!”
