Lifestyle Food Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich? Celebrities Weigh In Meryl Streep, Matt Damon and more stars lend their opinions on the heated food debate By People Staff Updated on March 22, 2018 11:04 AM Share Tweet Pin Email 01 of 10 MERYL STREEP Julian Parker/UK Press/Getty The controversy about whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich may be old, but it's certainly not over. The Internet still seeks answers on any social media platform it can—and celebrities are just as confused as the rest of us. We gathered the funniest answers that show just how torn the stars are on the matter. Let's start with Hollywood icon, Meryl Streep, shall we? "Is a hot dog a sandwich? Well with a bun, yes. Without a bun, no. It's a canapé," she revealed in a recent reddit AMA with her Florence Foster Jenkins co-star, Hugh Grant. Since she'll always be The Devil Wears Prada's Miranda Priestly in our eyes, we're inclined to trust her. 02 of 10 RUTH BADER GINSBURG Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Kevork Djansezian/Getty Stephen Colbert took the question to the highest level of federal court when he asked the Supreme Court Justice to weigh in—but Ginsburg immediately turned the tables on him. "You tell me what a sandwich is and then I'll tell you if a hot dog is a sandwich," she said, to which Colbert responded: "A sandwich is two pieces of bread with almost any type of filling in between as long as it's not more bread." After debating whether a bun that has not been totally separated into two parts qualifies as a sandwich, Ginsburg declared a hot dog is a sandwich. "On your definition, yes it is," she said. 03 of 10 J.J. WATT Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mizzen+Main While hosting an impromptu Q&A on his Twitter page, the NFL star was asked his opinion on the hot debate and simply answered: "No. It's a hot dog." He also offered some insight into his favorite alcoholic drink (Guinness), his favorite food (Crunch Berries) and his favorite soccer player (his girlfriend Kealia Ohai, aww ...). 04 of 10 ANTHONY BOURDAIN The fact that a hot dog is between bread is not enough to sway the Parts Unknown star. "The bread is a delivery system, a ballistic delivery system," Bourdain said in a recent reddit AMA interview. "It is not a classic sandwich, in my view." He even goes so far as to reference those who would know best: “If you were to [walk] into any vendor of fine hot dogs, and ask for a hot dog sandwich, they would probably report you to the FBI.” And for the record, "I don't think a hamburger is a sandwich either," he said. 05 of 10 ALTON BROWN Slaven Vlasic/Getty When Comedy Central inquired on Twitter, the Food Network host offered his advice: “Yes … a hotdog is a sandwich. #truestory." 06 of 10 ALEX GUARNASCHELLI Cindy Ord/Getty The celebrity chef kept her response simple and sure: "In my humble opinion, a hot dog is a sandwich," she wrote on Twitter. 07 of 10 MATT DAMON Nicholas Hunt/Getty "I've never considered a hot dog a sandwich because a hot dog is a hot dog," the Jason Bourne star said. "I mean technically it comes between 2 pieces of bread or one fold it into two, so I guess you can classify it as a sandwich. Then what would you call it, a hot dog sandwich? That's like a hat on a hat so let's just keep it as a hot dog." 08 of 10 LILY TOMLIN Roy Rochlin/FilmMagic "Well if it's not a sandwich, what is it? I'm wondering myself! So...either there's been no word invented for it or it is a sandwich. Could I have a vote on that? I think it's a sandwich," the actress said. Her reasoning? "I mean, you've got meat, you've got bread, you've got dressing of some sort—you've got sauerkraut or mustard or both, or ketchup or something—so I'd say it's a sandwich. It's not really good for you, but I eat them often enough. " 09 of 10 DAVID SCHWIMMER “I would say no, because the bread is joined,” the Friends alum told the Huffington Post. “I define a sandwich as two pieces of bread with stuff between it." 10 of 10 AARON PAUL Astrid Stawiarz/Getty/Hulu The Path actor had the most certain (and passionate) response of the bunch: "Is a hot dog a sandwich?! Of course not! What are you talking about? A hot dog is a hot dog, and god I love hot dogs. What are hot dogs made out of though? That's the question. You know when they say 'all beef' hot dogs? And you're like, 'Oh, well, it's not steak...what does that mean, 'all beef' hot dogs?" he said. "I mean... I know there's a line in Breaking Bad: 'pig lips and a-------' and I think that's what it's made of, pig lips and a------- But...literally butt. But no, hot dogs are not a sandwich, but great, GREAT, GREAT question!" So, there's that.
