When it came time to make over their 1840s home in Shepherd's Bush, London, actor Dominic West and his landscape designer wife, Catherine FitzGerald, opted out of hiring an interior designer. Instead, the college sweethearts took on the task themselves, converting the multi-apartment dwelling into a single-family residence decorated in bold hues and patterns.

"The house was falling down, and the garden was overgrown," FitzGerald tells Lonny magazine of what she saw the first time she laid eyes on the place. "But it was magical in its feeling and bones – full of light and personality." The colorful entrance is a nod to her childhood home, Glin Castle.

The couple chose an inviting theme that includes red armchairs, mismatched frames and sentimental items, such as artwork from family and friends as well as mementos from their voyages. "I suppose I most like taking pieces I've found on my travels and then putting them together," says FitzGerald.

The London home's atrium doubles as a dining area for the family. Tibetan prayer flags from West's paragliding trip in the Himalayas hang between the kitchen and the atrium.

While the couple scatters beloved gems from their travels throughout their three-story home, their master bedroom takes the cake with a large tapestry from Istanbul's Grand Bazaar hanging over the bed.

"The original garden was all overgrown, which I loved, but I couldn't leave it," says FitzGerald, who surrounded the pear trees with a vegetable plot of kale and rhubarb, flower beds and an outdoor dining table. "The kids are outside most of the time. Other kids come around, and we all know each other," she adds. "It's very neighborly. We even shout over the wall."
