We Tried N.Y.C.'s New Cookie Dough Shop — and We're Gushing Like Adele at the Grammys
I ordered two scoops: Salty & Sweet and Fluffernutter — both were incredible with distinctive flavors that really stand out
WHAT: DŌ (pronounced “doe,” m’dear), a New York City shop that serves safe-to-eat cookie dough, in all your favorite flavors — and more
WHO TRIED IT: Mark Marino, sweets addict, getting doughier by the day
WHY HE TRIED IT: Edible. Cookie. Dough. What don’t you understand?
Several months ago, I was walking my usual route to work when I noticed a new storefront under construction. D’oh! It was DŌ, an N.Y.C. shop that specializes in safe-to-eat cookie dough, and which, up till that point, had been a mail-order operation.
To say that I was elated by this discovery is putting it mildly, and I may or may not have skipped to the office. I mean, who doesn’t love cookie dough? And now I could enjoy it any day of the week and not have to worry about the pesky side effects of salmonella? Win, win!
Then it occurred to me: If I’m this excited about this e-coli-free concoction, lots of others will be too. Hundreds, it turned out: When the shop finally opened in January — d’oh! —the line was down the block, and it hasn’t let up since. The store, which now commands two-hour (or more) waits, even once closed down for two days because it couldn’t keep up with the demand.
Resigned to the fact that I would never get a taste of DŌ, I prayed to Our Lady of Perpetual Queues that I would one day get inside the store. Then a few weeks ago, I was passing the shop and — d’oh! — there was no mile-long line! Seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I hurried in, snatched a menu from a toddler’s hand, and got a sugar rush as I gave it a read. More than a dozen flavors, including Sugar Cookie, Brownie Batter, Gimme S’more, Red Velvet and Commando (I’m blushing).
And it gets better: Besides serving scoops in a cup or cone (which can be customized with toppings), DŌ also offers ice cream sundaes and milkshakes made with the dough, as well as baked cookies and ice-cream sandwiches.
I kept it straightforward and ordered two scoops: Salty & Sweet, a dreamy mix of sugar cookie, salted caramel, dark chocolate chips and sea salt, and Fluffernutter, a luscious combo of peanut butter, dark chocolate chips and marshmallow fluff. D’oh — both were incredible! Smooth, sweet and creamy, with distinctive flavors that really stand out. Remember how Adele gushed about Beyoncé during her Grammys acceptance speech? That’s how I feel about DŌ — it’s my Queen Bey.
Yes, DŌ definitely lives up to all the ado, but is it worth an hours-long wait in line? Personally, I can think of better ways to spend my time. But hey, you DŌ you.
