That old liter of flat cola that’s been sitting in your fridge for three weeks? Don’t throw it out.

The uniquely sweet flavor makes for a great marinade for meats, or, even better, throw it in a saucepan and boil it down to a thick syrup. This makes for the perfect glaze for whatever you’re grilling — pork ribs are classic, but it’s just as good on barbecue chicken, too.

Just like any other barbecue sauce, it’s best to brush it on during the last 5 minutes of grilling. This will caramelize the sugars in the soda into a dark, flavorful crust, but any longer and you run the risk of scorching.

The beauty of this hack is that it’s a 1-ingredient magic sauce, no other flavorings necessary. We recommend using straight-up cola — none of the diet stuff, the artificial sweetener can give it a strange flavor — but root beer is a fun twist as well.

Watch the video above to see how it’s done, then try it out for your next tailgating party or cook out. And if you’re hungry for more food hacks, we’ve got you covered.
