Hungry Girl Eat Like the Stars

Lisa Lillien is the author of the popular Hungry Girl website and email newsletter, featuring smart, funny advice on guilt-free eating.

She is also the author of eight Hungry Girl cookbooks, five of which debuted at number one on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Read her blog every Monday for slimmed-down celebrity recipes and more.

While supermodels are often quoted saying they eat pizza and hamburgers all day long and still manage to maintain their figures (how?!), other celebs aren’t shy about their healthy eating habits. Check these out, as well as my tips to help you follow in their glamorous footsteps…

Amber Riley Special K

Glee star and Dancing with the Stars contestant Amber Riley recently tweeted a pic of a Special K cereal bar with the caption “Breakfast of Travelers.” Great idea! It might be tempting to skip breakfast when you’re super busy, but it’s a bad idea. It can make you more likely to go a little overboard with your food intake later on. So make like Amber, and keep smart on-the-go options around.

When it comes to snack bars, I look for ones that have lots of protein and fiber to keep me feeling full. One of my favorites? Quest Bars. There’s around 15g fiber and 20g protein in each one, and they come in amazing flavors like Double Chocolate Chunk!

Tyra Banks snack

Tyra Banks, another busy gal, understands the importance of a power snack break. The America’s Next Top Model host fuels up with a simple apple and peanut butter combo. Fuji apples are my favorite—they’re the perfect blend of sweet and tart. And because it can be easy to dig a little too deep into the peanut butter jar, I opt for portion-controlled packets of peanut butter or almond butter, like the kinds by Justin’s Nut Butter. Straight-up nuts in single-serve packs are great with fruit, too!

Barack Obama veggies

And what about the POTUS? Barack Obama has said he learned to love veggies a lot more after discovering delicious ways to prepare them. So even if you think you don’t like Brussels sprouts and kale, find some new recipes (like these!) and give ’em a try. Michelle would approve…

Gwyneth Paltrow: Fish Tacos Recipe

From the salmon recipes in her latest cookbook to the halibut tacos she dines on while out and about, Gwyneth Paltrow is definitely a fan of fish. Salmon and halibut are both good sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which (bonus) have also been linked to skin and hair health.

But since you don’t want to O.D. on fat (even the healthy kind!), when you’re making fish, keep the rest of your meal on the slim side—skip added oil and butter and dress your salmon with a squirt of lemon or lime juice instead. Then pair with steamed veggies or baked spaghetti squash.

Blake Lively Smoothie Recipe

Blake Lively likes to counter her ice cream indulgences with veggie smoothies. I fully support this balanced approach to better-for-you eating, but if you’re not quite ready to drink your greens? Try a healthy fruit smoothie instead. I make mine with frozen fruit (make sure it’s unsweetened), light yogurt (use Greek for extra protein), and low-calorie juice drinks (Trop50 Pineapple Mango is a favorite). Watch out for store-bought smoothies made with syrups and loads of added sugar. Always check the nutritional stats!

‘Til next time… Chew the right thing!
