A Tennessee woman has been charged with murder after allegedly gunning down a young mom because she wanted her newborn baby.

According to the Catoosa County Sheriff, Catherine Goins met 30-year-old Natalia Brianne Roberts on the morning of Sept. 19. The two women struck up a conversation, and authorities say Goins invited Roberts to visit her at a friend’s house in northern Georgia.

“She lured her there with the pretense that she was wanting to give her some clothes for Roberts’s newly born baby,” Sheriff Gary Sisk said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Police say that Goins went to the friend’s house and waited. Sometime around 11 a.m., Roberts came to the house with two of her daughters, a 3-year-old and a 3-week-old.

But there were no baby clothes.

According to police, Goins used a .380-caliber handgun to shoot Roberts in the back of her head as she walked down a flight of stairs. Roberts fell forward, crashing to the bottom landing of the staircase. She was later found by police.

According to Sisk, Goins took Roberts’s two children and fled in the car. When asked by reporters if the two children were inside the house at the time of the shooting, Sheriff Sisk said, “I can’t answer that.”

In a statement issued by the sheriff, police allege that Goins, 37, had been “living a ruse” that she was pregnant. Everyone, including her boyfriend, believed her.

“She looked like she was ready to have that baby any minute,” her neighbor, Dorothy Hyder, reportedly told the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

When Goins’s boyfriend learned that she was not pregnant, he broke up with her. According to cops, that’s when Goins came up with a plan.

“Catherine Goins killed Natalia Roberts because she wanted her baby,” said Sheriff Sisk. “She was going to come out and say that it was hers.” He added that there was no evidence that Goins had been pregnant or had a miscarriage.

When Goins was arrested, she allegedly came up with an excuse for the shooting.

“Her original story was that Natalia, the victim, was an intruder in the house,” says Sisk.

According to her online obituary, Roberts is survived by three daughters: Anabell, Allorah and Addisyn.

Goins is charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. It is unclear whether she has an attorney.
