Marion "Suge" Knight was rushed to an L.A.-area hospital on Tuesday, shortly after pleading not guilty to murder charges.

Knight, 49, was arraigned to appear in court after a hit-and-run incident that occurred Jan. 29. The rap mogul was reportedly riding in a vehicle when it struck and killed a man in Compton, California, while another man was hospitalized.

He appeared before a judge on Tuesday and entered his plea before being taken to the hospital.

“He complained about some type of medical condition at which time our medical services were called and he was transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation,” Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department Deputy Kelvin Moody tells PEOPLE. “Paramedics were called to evaluate him and they felt the need to transport him to a local hospital.”

Moody says Knight complained “after he put in his plea of not guilty to the charges. He had already been seen by the judge.”

According to CNN, Knight had been complaining of chest pains.

His current condition is unknown but Moody confirms that he “is undergoing medical attention at a local hospital.”

If Knight is convicted in this case, he faces life in prison because of his prior criminal charges.
