A woman alleging to have been molested by 7th Heaven actor Stephen Collins has officially come forward.

“The Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Dept. is aware of an allegation involving Stephen Collins and a minor and is working in conjunction with detectives in New York on the matter,” an LASD spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The investigation comes less than 10 days after a tape (secretly recorded by Collins’s estranged wife, actress Faye Grant) of the actor confessing to inappropriate behavior with three preteen girls shocked Hollywood.

But even with the taped confession, legal experts speculated that Collins, 67, could possibly evade any legal prosecution for his acts, which the actor claims on the tape occurred decades ago.

“Based on what [Collins apparently] said, what he’s admitting to doesn’t permit the state to prosecute him after such a long passage of time,” says Robin Wilson, a family-law professor at Washington and Lee University. “What it comes down to is, the victims would have to come forward.”
