Reclusive real estate scion arrested on warrant out of Los Angeles

Real estate scion Robert Durst, who is the focus of HBO’s The Jinx, was arrested in New Orleans on Saturday evening for an out-of-state warrant issued in Los Angeles County.

Durst, 71, was linked to three strange crimes – the 1982 disappearance of his wife Kathleen, the 2000 shooting of friend Susan Berman, and the 2001 murder and dismemberment of neighbor Morris Black.

He was tried and acquitted for the 2001 murder on a self-defense claim. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Los Angeles District Attorney reopened the 2000 shooting case of Berman, Durst’s confidant and close friend since college.

Berman, who often served as Durst’s unofficial spokesperson to the media after the 1982 disappearance of his wife, was found shot to death execution-style in her California home. Authorities questioned Durst in both cases, but he was never charged.

Chip Lewis, Durst’s attorney, told NBC News that his client was arrested at the JW Marriott in New Orleans. He is expected to appear in front of a judge on Monday for an extradition hearing. Lewis told NBC that his client would not fight extradition to Los Angeles.

Lewis confirmed to The Washington Post that Durst has been charged with murder. Calls to Lewis by PEOPLE have not been immediately returned.

The FBI confirmed Durst’s arrest in a statement to PEOPLE.

“In the late evening hours of March 13th, 2015, the FBI New Orleans Violent Crimes Task Force (NOVCTF), in conjunction with the Louisiana State Police (LSP) and the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, arrested Robert Durst on an outstanding warrant out of Los Angeles,” the statement read.

The reclusive Durst became a hot topic last month after HBO began airing a six-part documentary called The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. The finale airs on Sunday night.
