Charges are pending against the suspect, also a 22-year-old woman, New York City police said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The woman was the victim of a possible baby-snatching, a city councilman said at the scene, according to The New York Times and NBC New York. A source told PEOPLE that the alleged attacker claimed the unborn baby was hers. The source also adds that the child survived.
Charges are pending against the suspect and the investigation is ongoing, according to the police statement.

Police responded to the scene, in the 4400 block of Monticello Avenue, at about 2:23 p.m. local time, following a 911 call about a physical dispute, according to the statement.
The victim was discovered at the scene with “multiple stab wounds to the torso” and was transported to an area hospital for treatment, where she was pronounced dead, according to the statement.
Police declined in the statement to name the suspect or the victim, pending family notification of her death, or elaborate on a possible motive or connection between the two.
“It appeared the fetus of the 22-year-old woman was surgically removed by the suspect who is in custody right now,” Councilman Andy King said at the scene, according to NBC New York.
“I am very disturbed,” he said. “This is a horrific incident.”
The victim was strangled and then stabbed, King said, citing the investigation, according to the Associated Press.
The victim’s child was hospitalized following her death, King said, according to the AP.
The crime scene inside the Bronx home included a blood-splattered staircase and bathroom, a knife and a placenta lying on the floor, an unnamed city official told the Times.
A next-door neighbor described the victim as unassuming.
“No loud music, no arguments,” she told the Times. “I keep thinking about that poor family. Next week is Thanksgiving.”
King did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
