A baby girl was fatally shot in the head while lying in her crib Tuesday evening as suspected gang-related gunfire erupted outside her Compton, California, home, police say.

The victim, Autumn Johnson, had just turned 1-year-old the week before she was killed, PEOPLE confirms.

Los Angeles police were called to the girl’s home at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, arriving ahead of paramedics.

Because of the life-threatening nature of Autumn’s wounds, police “decided to take the child and drove her to a local hospital in their patrol car,” reads a statement from investigators.
