On Sunday, April 11, a Black man was fatally shot by police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, after being stopped for a traffic violation.

He was later identified by family as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

In a statement, the Brooklyn Center Police Department said that officers initiated a stop for a traffic violation, pulling over Wright just before 2 p.m. local time on Sunday afternoon. According to police, when they tried taking Wright into custody, they say he re-entered his car. That's when one officer "discharged their firearm, striking the driver." The vehicle went several blocks before crashing into another car. The victim died at the scene, police said.

During an April 12 press conference, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said the shooting was unintentional.

"It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy her taser," he told reporters. "It appears to me that this was an accidental discharge."

A curfew was ordered through Monday morning.

According to CBS Minnesota, Wright's mother, Katie Wright (right, addressing the media), told a crowd following her son's death, "All the violence, if it keeps going it's only going to be about the violence. We need it to be about why my son got shot for no reason. We need to make sure it's about him and not about smashing police cars, because that's not going to bring my son back."

According to CBS Minnesota, Wright — center, receiving hugs from the crowd — told supporters that her son had called her from the car to let her know he was being pulled over. She said, "I just want people to know that if you get pulled over, make sure you put your hands up and don't make any sudden moves, and don't have air fresheners in your car because that's why he got pulled over. And he was only 20 years old and he didn't deserve to be shot and killed like this. "

She added, "And I don't want all of this, all of this. I just want my baby home. That's all I want is I want him to be home. I don't want everybody out here chanting and screaming, yelling, I just want him home, that's it."
