Party Monster Killer Michael Alig Released from Prison After 17 Years
Fellow club kid James St. James has some advice on what Alig should do next
Infamous club kid Michael Alig is a free man. The 48-year-old spent the past 17 years in prison for killing his roommate Andre “Angel” Melendez. In 2007, the former New York City party promoter was granted parole, but was denied his conditional release until May 5, 2014, reports USA Today.
Alig first became known for cofounding the Club Kids, a group of eccentric partiers popular in NYC’s ’90s club scene for their outlandish outfits and behavior. In 1997, he gained national attention after pleading guilty to murdering and dismembering Melendez and dumping him in the Hudson River over a bad drug deal. Alig was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
The club scene quickly died down after Alig’s imprisonment. Fellow Club Kids founder and friend James St. James recounted the heyday of the group and Melendez’s murder in his book Disco Bloodbath, which was adapted into the 2003 film Party Monster. In the movie, Alig is portrayed by Macaulay Culkin.
To help Alig prepare for his reentrance into society, St. James wrote an open letter to his old comrade for The Wow Report, full of tongue-in-cheek tips on how the world has changed.
“EVERYBODY has killer style now. Kids in Peoria are as fabulous as the kids in Williamsburg. It’s all rather dizzying, and kind of depressing. When everybody is fabulous, nobody is,” St. James reports. “OMG. Burger King changed their french fries and the world has never been the same. Cabs take credit cards now.”
“If you need a conversation opener, try ‘gluten.’ It’s all anyone talks about anymore. Say you’re thinking of going gluten-free, and see how people light up,” he continues.
According to the former inmate’s Twitter bio, there may be a book from Alig in the future. The self-proclaimed “king of club kids” says he spent his time behind bars working on a tome titled Aligula.
Tuesday morning, St. James shared an Instagram photo of his reunion with Alig:
