An Akron, Ohio, man has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his transgender son, then blamed a cult for his death.

Kevin Golec called police late Friday evening to report that his son had been attacked at their home, according to Cleveland.com.

In the 911 call, he told dispatchers that his son, 22-year-old Brian Golec, was part of a cult. “These guys came in and I fought them off,” Kevin said in the call. “They got him. They got me.”

At the scene, police reportedly discovered that Kevin, 52, had seemingly stabbed Brian and lied about it.

“It just breaks my heart,” Brian’s mother, Christine Hamblin, said Monday, per Cleveland.com. “He was still figuring the rest of his life out. He really wanted to help people.”

Friends say the 22-year-old’s gender identity was fluid. Though he had previously identified as a woman named “Bri,” in the past year he went by Brian. “But Brian hated labels,” friend Geoff Ackerman told the website.

In the hour before his death, Brian had confided to a friend that he thought his dad was doing drugs and stealing money from the family. Police believe it was that fight that led to the stabbing.

Authorities say that Brian’s gender identity was not a motive in his killing.

According to Fox 8 Cleveland, Kevin was charged with murder and felony domestic violence and is being held on $1 million bail.
