A North Carolina woman is facing criminal charges in Georgia after her 2-year-old son allegedly went into her purse, found her gun and fired one round into his stomach, PEOPLE confirms.

Court records indicate Valencia Burks, 22, was charged Wednesday with reckless conduct.

The arrest occurred just two days after her boy, whose name is not being released, accidentally shot himself in a Lithonia, Georgia, hotel room.

The shooting happened at around 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning, police say.

Burks and the rest of her family were in Georgia for a brief visit, according to police.

Burks’s son was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he has since undergone surgery to repair the non-fatal wound, police say. Doctors expect the child to make a full recovery, according to police.

If convicted, Burks faces a year in jail plus a fine of $1,000, police say. Court records do not indicate whether she has retained legal counsel for her defense.
