A 21-year-old mom clings to life in a New York City hospital days after police say the father of her 4-year-old daughter attacked her with an ax — allegedly the same weapon he used to nearly decapitate her pregnant friend.

According to NYPD sources, the little girl witnessed the attack, which police allege was carried out by her father, Jerry Brown.

The 34-year-old is charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

It was unclear if Brown had entered pleas to the charges or had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Sources confirm that police were called to Valle’s Brooklyn apartment early Saturday morning. Brown showed up at the home shortly before 1:30 a.m., and the two started arguing.

Valle’s friend, 20-year-old Savannah Rivera, was allegedly killed after trying to intervene between Valle and Brown, the sources say.

According to sources, the suspect’s daughter was uninjured.

Sources allege Brown start hacking at Rivera with an ax, and one source says the pregnant woman’s head was nearly detached from her neck.

According to sources, Brown allegedly struck Valle in the back of the head with the ax before fleeing.

Valle managed to order an Uber, and made her way outside, stumbling down the stairs of her apartment building just before fainting.

The Uber driver called 911.

The little girl is with relatives, sources say.

PEOPLE learns two of the officers who responded to the scene of the deadly attack have since been suspended.

One source tells PEOPLE the officers allegedly waited too long to enter the apartment. An internal review of their conduct is now underway.
