Police in New York City confirm to PEOPLE they’ve detained a 15-year-old girl who allegedly confessed to killing her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, whose bodies were discovered on Sunday night in an apartment in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.

A New York City Police Department spokesman tells PEOPLE that the unnamed girl has “made statements” to investigators about her alleged involvement in the slayings, but “has not yet been formally charged” in the case.

The spokesman would not comment on various media reports that suggest the teen killed the couple after her mother’s boyfriend repeatedly raped her.

However, a department source familiar with the case tells PEOPLE that the 15-year-old girl’s mother dismissed her daughter’s sexual assault claims, siding instead with her boyfriend.

On Sunday evening, police discovered both bodies, the spokesman says.

The 39-year-old mother was found dead in the bedroom, while the 40-year-old boyfriend was discovered in the kitchen with a knife still lodged in his body.

A police spokesman confirms the two victims were also shot.

According to the spokesman, the 15-year-old allegedly told investigators the killings occurred on Dec. 27.
