Shooter Kills 2 Students at New Mexico High School

Posted on

A shooter killed two students Thursday morning at a New Mexico high school, and the shooter is also dead, PEOPLE confirms.

The fatal victims were two students at Aztec High School, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jayme Harcrow tells PEOPLE. It was not immediately clear whether the victims were male or female.

The shooter was also killed, says Harcrow, but it was unknown how the shooter died.

Harcrow says the sex of the shooter has not been confirmed, and it was unclear if the shooter was also a student at the school.

Some news reports had said that more than a dozen people were injured, but Harcrow says those reports may be erroneous and that additional casualties have not been confirmed.

The New Mexico State police tweeted that no other injuries had been reported and that the school had been evacuated.

Harcrow says it was unclear whether the shooting was a discrete incident in which the victims were targeted or whether the shooter shot people at random.

“It’s horrible — it’s a great community and we love this place,” she tells PEOPLE. “Things can happen anywhere, but it’s shocking when they happen in a place like here.”

Other details about the incident, including how, where and when it occurred, were unavailable.

Authorities are setting up an area in the McGee Park Fairgrounds for parents to pick up their children.

Aztec High School is about 180 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
