A 24-year-old Nebraska woman has been missing since last week, after authorities say she went on an online date, and her family now worries she has been abducted.
Lincoln police tell PEOPLE they are investigating but have not announced if they believe foul play is involved.
“Sydney [Loofe] still hasn’t returned home,” mom Susie Loofe wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday, a day after anyone had last heard from her daughter. “We’ve had very few leads but haven’t lost our hope that she will return safely soon.”
Susie also shared a missing-persons poster for Sydney, which noted the family’s abduction fears.
In a news conference Tuesday morning, Police Chief Jim Bliemeister said, “Circumstances surrounding her disappearance are concerning.” He noted that multiple investigators were working the case along with the sheriff’s office and Sydney’s family.
The “last confirmed sighting” of Sydney was in Nebraska’s Saline County, southwest of Lincoln, Bliemeister said. He also asked the public for their help in searching for her.
Sydney was reported missing Thursday after she went on the date the day before with someone she met online, a police spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
Her family says she sent a friend a message on Snapchat on Wednesday before her date later that day.
When she didn’t show up to work on Thursday, Sydney’s friends became worried, local TV station KETV reports. Her friends didn’t find anyone at her home and her car was still parked in the driveway, the police spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
Her friends told local station WOWT that Sydney is very close with her family and would not disappear without telling them.
“That’s way out of character, something she wouldn’t do to her family, so something is wrong,” Terra Gehrig told WOWT.
Since she’s disappeared, Sydney’s phone has been turned off or has died. It last pinged a cell phone tower near Wilber, Nebraska, about 40 miles away from her Lincoln apartment.
Sydney, who is originally from Neligh, Nebraska, is 5-feet-7-inches tall with blonde hair, weighing 135 lbs., according to police.
She was last seen wearing a white Columbia-brand jacket and a cream-colored shirt.
“We don’t even know truly where to start,” Sydney’s mom told the Lincoln Journal Star. “It’s a waiting game.”
