A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after getting stabbed in Cudahy, California, on Monday.

His mother, Michelle Betancourt, 23, is being held on $1 million bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A neighbor told KTLA that her father went outside after hearing screams and found a woman holding a young boy, who had blood all over his body.

“He ran outside and he saw the lady holding the kid in her arm, and he had blood all over him – his chest, his neck,” the woman said. “So my dad told me he was going to walk away because he thought that the little boy died, and then he said he heard him crying. So he ran up to the kid, grabbed him from the lady. He started putting pressure on his neck.”

Though it is unsure if the woman holding the child is suspected to be Betancourt, the woman appeared to be in shock, KTLA reports.

The baby boy was transported to a local hospital and is not expected to survive, the Times reports. The paper also says the injured boy’s father told a neighbor that the boy accidentally stabbed himself in the face. “She was screaming, ‘It was an accident. I was cutting lemons,’ ” the neighbor said. according to the Times.

However, Lt. Holly Francisco of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department told KTLA, “We believe the mother intentionally stabbed the victim.”
