A man from Eden Prairie, Minnesota was charged on Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder, PEOPLE has learned.

According to a press release from the Hennepin County Attorney’s office, 30-year-old Yevgeniy Savenok is being accused of fatally stabbing his pregnant wife Lyuba Savenok, 23.

The expectant mother of two was taken to a local hospital where an emergency cesarean section was performed. The baby survived for several minutes, but later died, the documents obtained by PEOPLE reveal.

The alleged incident occurred late Saturday morning when Savenok showed up at the family home and took the couple’s two young children, placing them in his car before going back into the home. According to the release, he then allegedly used a kitchen knife to “repeatedly stab his wife, before fleeing.”

Lyuba’s sister, who was present in the home at the time of the alleged stabbing, reported seeing Savenok place the mother of his kids in a headlock and put her on the floor before allegedly stabbing her in the throat at which point she left the home and called police, who arrived shortly after Savenok drove off.

After leaving the home, Savenok drove with his children to United Hospital in St.Paul where he allegedly told a security guard that he killed his wife. According to a criminal complaint detailing the incident, St. Paul police were then called to the hospital where Savenok was arrested.

In his statement to police, Savenok allegedly admitted to stabbing his wife “at least seven times in her torso and upper chest” the complaint reads, adding that he also told authorities he considered using a knife to kill his wife during a return trip from Chicago the night before.

A coroner’s report later counted 12 stab wounds to Lyuba.

According to the complaint, Savenok also allegedly said that he believed Lyuba was going to take his children from him and that the stabbing was “probably like my only way out.”

“He stabs her so many times,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in the press release. “He stabs her in the chest and the stomach, knowing she was carrying his baby. It passes all understanding how one person can do that to another, especially his own progeny.”

Saturday’s fatal incident wasn’t the couple’s first encounter with police. While investigating, police received information about the pair’s tumultuous domestic past, including multiple occasions in both Illinois and Minnesota in which Lyuba had reported incidents of domestic assault with Savenok. At least one of those events resulted in an order of protection against the defendant.
