A 58-year-old woman has been charged with murder in Michigan after she allegedly bludgeoned her husband with a metal rod before attacking the couple’s 11-year-old dog.

A statement from authorities, obtained by PEOPLE, confirms the criminal counts pending against Yvonne Helen Cortis, who stands accused in last month’s deadly attack of Gregory Cortis. Yvonne Cortis has not yet entered a plea.

The police statement alleges murder charges were filed Wednesday, weeks after she was charged with assault and animal torturing.

Cortis died from multiple blunt force traumas to the head and torso, the statement claims.

Carly is improving daily, police say. Donations for her care can be made to the Pet Pantry at the Community Sharing facility in Highland, Michigan.
