The actor Michael Jace, best known for playing police officer Julien Lowe on The Shield, has been arrested for murdering his wife, who was found shot to death in her south Los Angeles home Monday night, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Police arrived at the Hyde Park home around 8:30 p.m. and found April Jace dead, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, which also says the investigation is ongoing and the believed motive is domestic violence.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Jace confessed to the shooting, but did not have a gun on hand when authorities came to his home, which the couple’s two kids were inside during the incident.

He was charged with homicide early Tuesday, reports CNN.

Jace, who CNN said is 51 – other reports put his age at between 48 and 50 – appeared in 89 episodes of The Shield between 2002 and 2008. He had small roles in a slew of other TV shows, including Southland, Private Practice, The Mentalist, Burn Notice and NYPD Blue.

He also played Michael Jordan in a 1999 TV movie about the NBA legend, and appeared in other movies such as State of Play and Forrest Gump.
