Authorities in New Haven, Connecticut, are investigating a mysterious pair of disembodied legs discovered near a busy train station Wednesday.
City police spokesman David Hartman told the New Haven Register a man approached a New Haven Police officer early Wednesday morning who said he found the legs, which were hidden within thick foliage along a fence in the area of the State Street Railroad Station.
Hartman told the paper the legs are believed to have been there over a week, and the gender, race and age of the victim cannot be determined without further forensic evaluation.
The discovery comes two days after an unidentified man approached officers walking the beat to say he saw the legs, according to the Register. Hartman said the man left before showing them the location of the legs, which were not immediately found.
Witnesses told WTNH the discovery included a right and left leg presumably from one person – although further testing will confirm – and consisted of the mid-calf area down to the foot. Police are searching for more body parts but have so far found none, the news station also reports.
New Haven resident Pablo Rivera told the Register at the scene Wednesday that he and a friend discovered the legs on Tuesday and reported them to police, but thinks his claim was not taken seriously. Rivera claims the legs had maggots crawling on them and had socks covering the feet but no shoes.
Madison resident Michael Fumiatti also told the Register he commutes via the station and sniffed something foul on Monday.
“Walking over I thought I smelled something a little odd like a dead animal or something and I never really gave it a second thought,” Fumiatti said. “You got to wonder what happened down here, was it a train accident or was it something else nefarious that went on?”
