Kim Kardashian West sent a heartfelt message to the family of a former New Orleans Saints player who was fatally shot over the weekend.

“My heart breaks for my sweet friend Rockie. I’m deeply saddened by your loss,” the 35-year-old reality star tweeted on Sunday, referring to the wife of Will Smith, the 34-year-old former NFL player who died in a road rage incident on Saturday. She was also injured in the shooting.

In a follow-up tweet, Kardashian West wrote, “Sending so many prayers to her & her family! May the Lord surround her & her children with love and protection during this devastating time.”

Kardashian West likely got to know the Smiths while she was dating Reggie Bush, who played with the Saints alongside Smith from 2006 to 2010.

The Keeping up with the Kardashians star remembered the athlete in another tweet.

“Will, you were an angel to your family on earth and you will continue to be in the life after. May God bless you!” she tweeted.

Police alleged in a news release that both Smith and his wife, Racquel, were shot by Cardell Hayes in after he rear-ended their vehicle with his hummer in New Orleans. Smith died from the gunshot wounds, police claim, while Racquel survived.

Hayes, 28, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder along with aggravated battery for shooting Racquel, police said.

An official previously told PEOPLE that Racquel was shot once in the right leg, but the injury is considered non-life-threatening.
