A little more than a week after John Edwards pleaded not guilty to violating campaign finance laws, his mug shot was released Wednesday – and it appears he handled the photo opportunity like a true politician.

The former U.S. Senator, who was indicted June 3 in North Carolina on six counts – including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements – is all smiles in the photo.

Edwards was accused of using political funds to cover up his affair and out-of-wedlock child with Rielle Hunter while he was running for president in 2008. A plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department fell through because the two-time presidential candidate refused to serve jail time.

“There is no question that I’ve done wrong,” Edwards, 57, said after the indictment. “But I did not break the law, and I never, ever thought I was breaking the law.”
