13-Year-Old Girl and Teacher Injured in Indiana Middle School Shooting as Student, 13, Is Suspect

A 13-year-old female student and teacher were injured during a shooting at an Indiana middle school Friday morning and a male student, 13, is in custody as the suspect, police said.

The shooting took place at Noblesville West Middle School.

“There are two victims en route to Methodist from the Noblesville West Middle School Active Shooter,” Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police wrote on Twitter.

The condition of the injured victims wasn’t immediately clear.

In news footage, authorities could be seen escorting children out of the school. Students were taken to Noblesville High School but were cleared out after a threat came into the school, officials said.

Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt told reporters Friday a male student asked to be excused from class, and left the classroom. “He returned armed with two handguns,” Jowitt explained, noting the situation was “resolved extremely quickly.”

According to the Indianapolis Star, the teacher injured Friday tackled the alleged 13-year-old suspect, bringing an end to the violent incident. The paper identified the hero teacher as Jason Seaman, a science teacher.

Seaman has been an instructor for Noblesville schools for nearly four years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He also coaches the seventh-grade football team.

Noblesville is just north of Indianapolis. Its population was about 52,000 in the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County and the 14th largest municipality in the state.
